Strikes with a twist - April 15, 2014

Most of my posts to date pertained to classic strikes familiar to everybody. In addition to those, there is a category of strikes in Systema referred to as strikes "with a twist", "change of direction", or "wandering" strikes. To deliver one of those, the striker turns the fist upon contact with the target so that the strike "screws" into opponent's body along a curve rather than a straight line, just like a screw into wood.

Filling fists with weight - April 13, 2014

One really confusing thing to me in Systema was the concept of pushing or striking somebody with a fist without tension in the arm, chest, or shoulder. And understandably so - we are conditioned to believe that strong muscles equal more power, and the more muscular you are, the harder you can strike.

Cooperative work - April 8, 2014

One interesting aspect of Systema is cooperative work. In theory, help from others should improve your chances of achieving a set objective, especially in combat. However, in practice this really depends on the situation and how well you are able to cooperate with the friendlies.
