Notes on strike exchange

At some point in training, one (hopefully) graduates to continuous strike exchange with a partner, which is just one step short of sparring. Strike exchange is useful in may ways, the basic one being to practice rhythm and continuity. Today, however, I'll focus on some more subtle aspects.

Bring your students into a receptive state

For instructors, advance class planning is important – that's probably the only sure way to have students make identifiable, sustainable gains and take something out of each class. However, before delivering the main content, instructor needs to bring students into the right state for receptive learning, whether it is being sufficiently tired, or calm, or soft and mobile, depending on the day's subject.

More on rolling and moving on the floor

Rolling on the floor, especially over a partner is challenging despite its apparent simplicity. It takes a while just to overcome the stigma of the fall and get used to going down. And even then, especially when rolling or moving over small obstacles we tend to tense up in anticipation of hitting the floor.
